Hello, madhattergenealogy. When the first edition of EE was prepared two decades ago, "digital image" was the common term used for images found online. The online world was then a strange new frontier that many users did not understand and language needed to be explicit. Since then, the need to specify "digital" when referencing online images no longer exists. Everyone today understands that if an image is online, it's in digital form.
Please understand that source citation is not about the dogmatic use of certain words. Source citation is about the thoughtful analysis of each source we are using, the ways that each source differs from others, and the full description of that source so others can (a) understand the nature of what we have used; and (b) find that source for verification and additional information. As media formats and other circumstances change, so will our words.
