Citing a PDF publication of the book

Hello from Serbia again!

Recently I found out a book originaly published as printed edition in 1993. It was published online as PDF edition. I found out in EE book in Chapter12.62 especially page 700, that it needs eight elements for citing the PDF publications: author, title, publication date, download format, website name, URL, download date, and specific page.

It follows with Source List Entry and Reference Notes (First and Subsequent).

In my case citation would be

Vojinovic, Mileta. Pljevaljski kraj, 1993. PDF download. Mostovi kulture. http://mostovikulture.wordpress.com/2014/04/24/pljevaljski-kraj-proslost-i-poreklo-stanovnistva-vojinovic-mileta/ : downloaded 21 May 2014), p. 117

In genealogical software that I use there is no possibility to cite as a Source E-book publication. There is possibility to use CD/DVD editions of the books or Website as author of publication.

What to do?

Fr. Delic,

EE cannot give advice on how to maneuver within a particular software. It's just impossible to be an expert in the latest version of all the various programs.  Presuming your software gives you the option of a free-form citation, then the source list entry and reference note would look like this:

SOURCE LIST ENTRY:

Vojinovic, Mileta. Pljevaljski krajPlace of publication: Publisher,   1993. PDF download. Mostovi kulture. http://mostovikulture.wordpress.com/2014/04/24/pljevaljski-kraj-proslost-i-poreklo-stanovnistva-vojinovic-mileta/, 2014.

REFERENCE NOTE:

Mileta Vojinovic, Pljevaljski kraj (Place of publication: Publisher, 1993), 117;  PDF download, Mostovi kulture (http://mostovikulture.wordpress.com/2014/04/24/pljevaljski-kraj-proslost-i-poreklo-stanovnistva-vojinovic-mileta/ : downloaded 21 May 2014).

You'll note the following alterations:

  • A specific page of a book is cited only in the reference note (footnote or endnote), not in the source list entry. The source list is a very generic list of sources. The individual reference notes are the place where specific detail is given for specific assertions.
  • For reference notes, the author's name is given in natural order. It is reversed only in the source list, because those entries are arranged in alpha order by last name of author.
  • For reference notes, we use no internal periods. Separating the elements of a citation with periods is done only in the generic source list.
  • Because a PDF would be an image copy of the 1993 edition, rather than a new and different edition, our citation needs to include the original publication data.
  • Also because this is not a new edition, the page number should be attached to the original edition, rather than to the download.

If your software does not give you the option of crafting your citation "free-form," then perhaps other users of that software can help you devise a workaround for whatever is built into your program's template.

Best wishes.

Dear Elizabeth,

thanks very much for your suggestions, especially for pointing out difference between Source List Entry and Reference note Entryy (page number DOES NOT go into Source List Entry). I forgot to mention that my citation is only Reference note.

I'm using Family Tree Maker 2012 and after a while found Online publications (Image copy by Title and by Author) as right template to work with.

In it, however, there is no field for entering Place of publication or Publisher, but if I ever manage to publish my work I'll certainly put it like you suggested.

I'll of course put page numbers in Reference notes as they appear in the image copy of the book. You were right, IT IS indeed image copy of the book exported to PDF file.

Also thanks for pointing out so much variables for citations in your book, and to put spiral image of whole genealogy work - research, evidence etc.

Sincerely yours,

Fr. Ivan Delic
