Hi,

I need to cite online image copies of a Danish church book. These are my observations:

<ul>

<li>The church books (original paper ones) are now kept by the Danish National Archive in Viborg.</li>

<li>The digitized church books are at the website of the Danish National Archives.</li>

<li>In order to find the original paper book (which is not accessible to the public, but nevertheless this is the basis of the scanned images), one has to know that the parish covered by this book was under a "pastorat" (clerical district) covering 3 parishes.</li>

<li>The church book in question covers all 3 parishes in the rectory, but is divided into sections for each parish.</li>

<li>In order to find the scanned images of this particular church book, one needs to select one of the parishes from a list, meaning the name of the "pastorat" cannot be selected on this list. The scanned images of this particular book can be found by chosing any one of the 3 parishes.</li>

<li>The archive has scanned the oldest church books twice (different file types). Both the old and the new scans are available and are all listed together when selecting the parish. Image 25 in the new scan does not neccesarily cover the same page from the church book as image 25 in the old scan, so the version of the scan needs to be stated.</li>

My problem is placing all the information in the right order, and also how much of it I need to include in the reference notes (full and short).

Can anyone provide some guidance on this?

Citations to Scandinavian church registers are modelled at EE 7.42 and 7.45. You'll also find underlying guidance throughout the church records chapter (chapter 7), particularly at 7.2 and 7.36.

Thank you for the response.

I have read chapter 7 several times, but I am still at a loss, especially when it comes to where in the Source List Entry I have to place the "scan version" and "pastorat" information. If you can point to a specific section iin EE which deals with that, I will gladly read it again :)

EE's 1100+ examples do not include that particular set of records. But the models to which I pointed you can be adapted to meet your need. Without examining both your item of interest and how its presented at that particular website, and without having the exact details from a document with which to construct a citation, I can't create for you an exact formula to follow. (That's one reason why our FAQs say that we cannot design custom citations for all who inquire. The other reason, of course, is time.) 

If you'll take the data you have extracted, and use one of those models to create a citation (in Reference Note and Source List Entry formats, since you asked about one in your first message and another in the second message), then we can talk about whether tweaks are needed.

Your proposed citations cover almost all of the essentials that you mentioned in your initial query. The one thing I don't see is a reference to which filming you are citing--the first or the second. Given your point that the images are differently numbered from one film to the next, that would be essential.  How about this?

EE would also make one other tweak.  Given that reference notes are written sentence-style, with all relevant details for a source in one sentence, the period after the website name needs to be replaced. Otherwise, those who are not familiar with this source might assume that you are citing two different sources here.

Putting the website's publication place and date of access in parentheses after the name of the publication follows the same pattern that is commonly used for a print publication

Apologies for not responding promptly yesterday after you posted your citations. It's a major conference week here. Between lectures and board meetings, there's rarely a big enough block of time to think through citation issues.
