"Davy Crockett" horse

Dear Collective Wisdom: I was researching a probate record from 1870 in Harrison County, Texas and came across the following description of a horse in the inventory: "Davy Crockett horse." It was valued at $25. A quick perusal of the internet gave me only toy horse figurines and other Davy Crockett ephemera. Has anyone here come across this description? Or, does anyone know of a good reference for horses or know of a horse scholar? Thank you in advance for any assistance!

V P Stroeher, you might try posting your query at The Genealogy Squad's Facebook page. https://www.facebook.com/groups/genealogysquad.  Given the size of its following, you'd have a far better chance of finding there someone who has encountered this before. (My own searches this afternoon turned up only the same sites you were finding, plus your query of this afternoon at Wikitree.)

Thank you so much for this. I did not know about that group! A person at Wikitree came up with the following, which makes perfect sense for the region: simply a saddlebred: http://www.kmsha.com/magazine/archives/13_Fall_Intl/history_of_gaited_horse.htm I did find it intriguing that it was valued less highly than the mules -- quite telling, I think!
