Comparing two original and microfilmed Church Record sources

I am having issue regarding two sources which cannot be both true.

They both have records from Original Church Record Books, microfilmed inLocal Historical Archives of my birth town.

The first one is from Baptism Parish Church Record Book, which I cite as:

St. Nikola's Church (Jezevica, Cacak): "Baptism Record Book 1864-1875," p. 142, no. 6, Delic Drinka Ljubomir baptism (1875), microfilm 10, frame Scan 00154; Historical Archives, Cacak.

Source citation from this book cite Mrs. Rayka Delic as a godfather for new baptized Drinka on February 2nd 1875. She is also cited as a widow of Mr. Nikola Delic, so her husband passed away before that particular baptism.

The other record is from Marriage Record Book of the same Parish Church, which I cite as:

St. Nikola's Church (Jezevica, Cacak): "Marriage Record Book 1881-1904," p. 156, no. 20, Delic-Popovic marriage (1901), microfilm 11, frame Scan 00051; Historical Archives, Cacak.

Source citation from this book cite Nikola Delic and Mrs. Rayka Delic as a parents of Groom Sreten Delic who was born on March 10th 1878.

How is it possible for Nikola to be entered as a father of someone THREE YEARS AFTER HIS OWN DEATH? What to do to make sure which one of those two citations is correct? Any suggestions?

Sincerely,

My question is: How is it possible to someone give birth to child THREE YEARS AFTER HIS OWN DEATH? What to do for those citations, how to find which one is true?

Father Delic,

If I understand you correctly, your problem is one of record analysis, rather than citation, but the way you express it above does raise a citation issue that needs to be addressed here. Let's do that first, to clarify things. Then we can address the analysis problem. I will list several points below, which reflect my interpretation of what you mean.

  • You state that you have an issue "regarding two sources which cannot both be true."
  • You state that both of these sources "have records from" some OTHER sources and that those OTHER sources are microfilmed church records.
  • You state that a "source citation" from "this book" cites Mrs. Rayka Delic as a godparent to the child.

Perhaps I am misunderstanding what you mean by "source citation." In English, a source citation would be an identification of the source that is attached to someone's research notes--or a footnote or endnote in someone's book or article in which their text made an assertion and then, in their note, they cited what source they used.

Which of the following would be true in this case?

1. You are using a published book—maybe a genealogy—in which the author asserts that the child was baptized on a certain day and that Mrs. Delic was a godparent.

Or

2. You are using only the manuscript baptismal register and you are using the manuscript marriage register --and you see what appears to be a contradiction between the details in those two original records.

Dear Elizabeth,

I must deeply apologize for not being simple and concrete. When I said I'm using source citation, I should say that I'm using source and cite it. I am using microfilmed manuscript baptismal and marriage register books, and in them I found big contradiction. Nikola is found as a father of his son three years after he (Nikola) died.

How to resolve this issue.

Sincerely grateful,

Fr. Ivan Delic

Fr. Delic,

Thanks for clarifying. You do indeed have an evidence analysis problem. Let me repost your message in that forum. There, I'll strip it down to the essentials for that problem, so the issue will be clear there.
