Citation of book excerpt

The book I have is a reprint and is indicated as so on the title page. However, on the reverse of the page states the following: "Excerpted from History of Wallingford, Conn., from its Settlement in 1670 to the Present Time. Meriden, Connecticut, 1870. Reprinted with a new index and guide to families by Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc. Baltimore: 1979."

There is a Publisher's Note: "This work is excerpted from Charles Davis's History of Walingford, Conn., from its Settlement in 1670 to the Present Time and originally constituted pages 611-941 of that work, appearing under the heading "Genealogies."

So, how do I cite the fact this is an excerpt from the 1870 book?

Jana, from your description, two questions come to mind:

  • What is the present title?
  • Is there an editor, as is often the case with these types of volumes published by GPC?

Checking GPC's catalog, I do not find a listing for this under the title you give. Amazon's catalog has several versions of the 1870 volume, but not the 1979 work. At Worldcat, I find a catalog entry for a 1979 volume called Early Families of Wallingford, Connecticut, for which Worldcat offers a description "Excerpted from Davis' History of Wallingford, Conn."  WorldCat lists no editor, only the original author Charles Henry Stanley Davis.

If this is the volume, then EE would cite the 1979 book, under its new title, because GPC did create a significantly different work. To the first reference note, you can then add a note stating that the publisher "excerpted" the work from [cite the original fully] and added new material.

I will cite the 1979 book. I truly didn't realize it was published under a different name! Sheesh. Thank you!

There is no editor listed, however there is a "thanks" to Thomas Hollowak fo the index and Paul Matulonis for typing the index. I will use Charles Davis as he was the original author.
