Book I own with 2 volumes and a different compiler per volume.

Hello again,

Happy belated Thanksgiving!

I have a 2 volume set of books that I own.  The title is: Early Settlers of Lee County, Virginia and Adjacent Counties.  Volume 1 is by Anne Wynn Laningham and Volume 2 is by Hattie Muncy Bales.

I am currently working on cleaning up and correcting my sources and citations.  What a project!!

I am totally lost on what to do here.  My initial thought was to list both volumes as 1 source.  But, the different authors and also the different information listed for the second printing makes me think that I need to do a separate source for each volume.

Also, there are 2 different printings of these books.  I bought the 2nd printing of both volumes. The original printing was: Media, Inc., Printers and Publishers. Greensboro, North Carolina. 1977.

The 2nd printing on volume 1 is: Copyright 1977 by Mrs. Anne W. Lanningham -  ALL RIGHTS RESERVED - Printed in the United States of America - Second Printing - Wytheville, Virginia 2002. There is also the concern here regarding the spelling of the last name Laningham.  I have spelled the names correctly as they are printed on front cover and the publisher page.

The 2nd printing on volume 2 is: Copyrighted, 1977 by Mrs. Charles Clinton Bales - Second Printing Wytheville, Virginia 2002. There is also an issue with Hattie Bales name. The cover of the book is: Hattie Muncy Bales and the inside page is: Hattie Byrd Muncy Bales, compiler and the printer is Mrs. Charles Clinton Bales.

Here is what I have come up with as a source list entry and first reference note for Volume 1:

Laningham, Anne Wynn, compiler. Early Settlers of Lee County, Virginia and Adjacent Counties, Volume 1. 1977. Reprint, Wytheville: Mrs. Anne W. Lanningham, 2002.

1. Anne Wynn Laningham, compiler, Early Settlers of Lee County, Virginia and Adjacent Counties, Volume 1 (1977; reprint, Wytheville: Mrs. Anne W. Lanningham, 2002), [page no].

Here is what I have for Volume 2:

Bales, Hattie Muncy, compiler. Early Settlers of Lee County, Virginia and Adjacent Counties, Volume 2. 1977. Reprint, Wytheville: Mrs. Charles Clinton Bales, 2002.

1. Hattie Muncy Bales, compiler, Early Settlers of Lee County, Virginia and Adjacent Counties, Volume 2. (1977. reprint, Wytheville: Mrs. Charles Clinton Bales, 2002), [page no].

I have a lot of families that are listed in these books.  My mother's family runs very deep in Lee County, Virginia. Here is an example of the Muncy section of the book in a pdf:

I hope I have explained all the issues correctly and that it is easy to understand.

Thanks again for all your help,

Linda Rogers

Linda, Evidence Style citations would treat those as two different books, as you have done—with a tweak in the Reference Note to address a general issue, not one specific to the quirk you have inquired about. Your citation for the first volume states:

       1. Anne Wynn Laningham, compiler, Early Settlers of Lee County, Virginia and Adjacent Counties, Volume 1 (1977; reprint, Wytheville: Mrs. Anne W. Lanningham, 2002), [page no].

"Volume 2" should be in roman type, not italicized. Titles of published works are itacilized, but the volume number is not part of the title. See EE 12.25 Italicizing Volume Number.
