Hello, I would appreciate advice regarding this waypoint citation. The image link is https://www.onland.ca/ui/4/books/80225/viewer/682762890?page=90
My attempt is:
“Ontario Land Property Records Portal,” browsable images, Ontario Land Registry Access (https://www.onland.ca/ui/ ) > Historical Books > Abstract/Parcel Register Book > Ottawa-Carleton (04) > Nepean > book 26 > Concession 2 > Ottawa Front, lot 21 to 30 > image 90 of 240; west ½, lot 24, p.1, instrument 412, John Hogg to son William, by will dated 27 October 1830, registered 24 June 1831.
Also, is it reasonable to think John was alive on 27 October 1820 and died by 24 June 1831? Probate packet pending. Thanks.
Hello, Nancy. It’s an…
Hello, Nancy. It’s an interesting site, construction wise. Unfortunately, this path you’ve laid out does not work for me:
(https://www.onland.ca/ui/ ) > Historical Books > Abstract/Parcel Register Book > Ottawa-Carleton (04) > Nepean > book 26 > Concession 2 > Ottawa Front, lot 21 to 30 > image 90 of 240.
After the URL we have the following 8 waypoints, that we should follow in this order:
At the URL, I see the option for Waypoint 1: “Historical Books.”
When I click that option, I do not see an option for Waypoint 2 (Abstract/Parcel Register Book). Instead, I get this screen:
As you see, it provides a list of place names, but says nothing like "Abstract/Parcel Registry Book."
Ignoring Waypoint 2, I then jumped to Waypoint 3 and chose “Ottawa-Carleton (04)" from the scroll-down menu. That took me to this screen:
Here, we see the option “Abstract/Parcel Register Book” which is you Waypoint 2 that I had to skip over earlier.
However, among the options here, I don’t see any option for the next waypoint, Waypoint 4 (Nepean). Instead, it asks for “Property Description: Select Type” and Nepean is not an option there.
If I use the blank “Other Information” blank and type "Nepean," then I’m given another screen with 10 options:
But none of these options match any of the details you give in Waypoints 5, 6, or 7.
Meanwhile, the URL that you provide for the exact image does work. That leaves us with one of two options:
Would you try one of these two and give us another draft to work with?
For those who are confused…
For those who are confused by how to access records on this site, the Huron County Branch of the OGS has a step-by-step procedure that they can follow. See https://huron.ogs.on.ca/huron-land-records/
I must admit; I am having a bit of difficult in how to document the way to access a specific image due to the convoluted path to get there. Yes; I could create a trail-of-breadcrumbs, but it would probably take the whole loaf :>)
I'd suggest that using a link to the first image of the digitized exhibit and an image number might be the least confusing method for anyone later trying to relocate the specific image in question. When one uses a link, such as: https://www.onland.ca/ui/14/books/63697/viewer/319402242?page=1, the initial exhibit page is displayed. This is most convenient if one is interested in a number of locations under the same registry office. At the top of the page, for the given example, one sees some key information about the exhibit; "Abstract/Parcel Register Book", "GLENGARRY (14)", "CHARLOTTENBURG", "Book 66". If one then browses to an imaged page, for example image 170, one will see the noted information repeated, the page title "Abstract Index / Répetoire par lot", and a specific page number. On the page, each land transfer has an associated registration number that can be used as an index to the specific record.
I believe this information should be sufficient to construct a valid citation.
I believe it might look like this:
Ontario, Abstract/Parcel Register Book, "Abstract Index / Répetoire par lot", Glengarry Co. (Land Registry Office 14), Charlottenburg Twp., book 66, page 121, concession 8, lot 24, reg. no(s). 8057, 9885 and 10318, showing land transfers involving Joseph Bergeron (and wife); imaged as Ontario, ONLAND, Ontario Land Property Records Portal (https://www.onland.ca/ui/14/books/63697/viewer/319402242?page=1 : accessed 6 September 2025), image 170 of 261. Indicates that Joseph Bergeron owned one or more portions of said land between 11 October 1904 and 8 Mar 1916.
Now; this is just my attempt at trying to cite a typical record and constructive criticism is welcome.
