Library and Archives Canada 1931 Census

Hello, I am not sure how to cite the new LAC site for the 1931 census, eg

https://recherche-collection-search.bac-lac.gc.ca/eng/Home/Record?app=census&IdNumber=81310547&ecopy=e011672090

My attempt using 7.47:

1931 census of Canada, Ontario, enumeration district 144 Port Arthur-Thunder Bay (144 B Thunder Bay), sub-district 1 Nipigon Twp, page 7, dwelling 49, family 48, Robert Fraser; imaged, “Census Search, 1931”, Library and Archives Canada (https://recherche-collection-search.bac-lac.gc.ca/eng/Home/Record?app=census&IdNumber=81310547&ecopy=e011672090 : accessed 29 September 2024), ecopy number e011672090.

Thanks!

Hello, nancyfraser,

You’ve done quite well, form-wise; but there are a couple of issues with the details. Your draft states:

1931 census of Canada, Ontario, enumeration district 144 Port Arthur-Thunder Bay (144 B Thunder Bay), sub-district 1 Nipigon Twp, page 7, dwelling 49, family 48, Robert Fraser; imaged, “Census Search, 1931”, Library and Archives Canada (https://recherche-collection-search.bac-lac.gc.ca/eng/Home/Record?app=census&IdNumber=81310547&ecopy=e011672090 : accessed 29 September 2024), ecopy number e011672090.

As the attached shows,

  • Robert Fraser is in dwelling 49, family 48, but he is on page 5, rather than page 7.
  • After we go to the URL, “ecopy number e011672090” is not something we have to search for at that URL to find the right image, so it should not be there in that layer for the website. The ecopy number (and the item number that is shown with it in the "details" sidebar) is a cataloging number that the archives uses for that record set. If we cite either number (which isn’t necessary for website use) we would put it in a third “citing ….” layer, as below:

1931 census of Canada, Ontario, enumeration district 144 Port Arthur-Thunder Bay (144 B Thunder Bay), sub-district 1 Nipigon Twp, page 7, dwelling 49, family 48, Robert Fraser; imaged, “Census Search, 1931”, Library and Archives Canada (https://recherche-collection-search.bac-lac.gc.ca/eng/Home/Record?app=census&IdNumber=81310547&ecopy=e011672090 : accessed 29 September 2024); citing ecopy number e011672090.

Thank you very much, EE. I did wonder if the ecopy number was needed and if "Census Search, 1931" was a reasonable title. Page error is embarrassing, thanks! Nancy
