How to Cite this "Occasional Publication"

I have been struggling with how to properly cite this book, Records of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Hagerstown, Maryland, Volume 1, copied and presented by Mrs. Warren D. Miller, Historian, Conococheague Chapter, DAR, of Hagerstown, Maryland, presented through the Genealogical Records Committee of the Maryland State Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Western Maryland Room, Washington County Free Library, Hagerstown, MD.

1st.  How do I deal with Mrs. Warren D. Miller, who copied the records of the church.  She's not the author, editor or compiler.  I've never seen a citation with "copier" in it.  So how would I describe her contribution?

2nd.  I'm trying to decide where to find the publisher informaton.  Would that be Genealogical Records Committee of the Maryland State Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution?

3rd.  If I'm right (above), what do I do with the Conococheague Chapter?

Finally, the book was presented to the Western Maryland Room, Washington County Free Library, Hagerstown, MD.  Should I include this in the citation?

Seems cofusing.

Mike, these DAR "Records Committee" compilations are, indeed, confusing. Have you used EE 4.20, "Compiled Records (GRC Reports), DAR"? You'll note, there, that differences exist in the way the Records Committee items are cited, depending upon whether you found a copy at a local or state library or used the serial copy at the NS-DAR library itself. This type of source is not an "occasional publication" as covered at 12.86; Chapter 12 deals with published books, CDs, etc.

With regard to your specific questions:

1. You should "deal with" Mrs. Warren the same way that Clara G. Mark is "dealt with" at EE 4.20. If, from your analysis of the source, you conclude that Mrs. Warren was a "transcriber" rather than a "compiler," then simply substitute that word.

2. The reason you are having trouble identifying a publisher is that you're not dealing with a publication. You're working with an unpublished compilation. EE 4.20 discusses this, also.

3. Whether the compilation was produced by the Conococheague Chapter or the Washington Court House Chapter (as in the Clara Mark example), the format is the same. You just substitute the chapter name.

4. When compilations are "presented" by a person or a group to a library, that detail is not part of a citation. What is essential, when dealing with an unpublished source, is that the library/archive/repository be identified.

Mike, you might also want to review EE 2.68 "Italics (or Underscoring)" for the subsection "publication titles." The guidance here could save you needless effort in many citations to come.
