Source List vs Source List Entry

I am new to Genealogy research and I want to be sure I start off on the right foot. I've read and re-read chapter 2 of the 3rd edition of EE. I am still uncertain as to the difference between the "Source List" and the "Source List Entry." Are they the same thing? Also, can I make a comparison between Family Tree Maker's "Source Title, Citation Detail, Citation Text and Reference Note" and EE's "Source List Entry and First Reference Note". Is there any similarity? Thank You for any help.

Ron,

  • A "Source List" is the list itself. Another name for it that we learned in middle school is "Bibliography."  To be technical here, a bibliography is a list of books (from the Greek root word biblio meaning book).  EE uses the term source list rather than bibliography because good historical researchers use mostly records (i.e., sources) that have never been published in book form.
  • A "Source List Entry" is each item you enter on that list. (EE 2.10).

As a comparable example, we make "To Do Lists," on which we enter "items" to be done.

EE 2.47–2.53 covers Source Lists and how to arrange entries within the Source List. The first attached page below, from EE 2.49, shows how to arrange entries on a source list that covers all those original documents we gather from local or regional record offices. The second page below is from EE's own bibliography (i.e., EE's list of other useful reference books on the topic of citation and evidence analysis). This page shows how to arrange entries on a Source List that covers published books.

The questions you have about your own software would be better addressed in that software's forum. Because of the many different types of databases and citation managers, and the unique ways in which their engineers have interpreted both EE and citation principles in general, we do not answer questions about specific software.

You're welcome, Ron. That's why we're here. This journey into the past that you've embarked upon is a wonderful education, but there will be many puzzlers along the way.
