Magazine section of a Newspaper

I’m trying to cite an article that appears in The Floridian as part of a of the St. Petersburg Times.

CMOS 14.197 shows an example of the New York Times Magazine. In that example however, the name of the parent newspaper is not necessary. I think in this case it is because otherwise no one would know it was part of the St. Petersburg Times, not to mention that the Floridian is also the name of a former newspaper.

This is my attempt and I've treated it much like the magazine is section although I am unsure if that's the way to do it.

Hendrickson, if I looked at your citation without having read your explanation first, I would be puzzled over two things:

  1. Why are there two different italicized titles in the citation to the newspaper—one before the date and one after it but before the page numbers?
  2. When you start a new sentence and say "Newspapers identifies the paper as ...," are you referring to
  • newspapers in general (which would call for no italics and the word would be capitalized at the start of the sentence); or
  • Newspapers, the website (which would call for italics to indicate it's the name of the website_?

With regard to point 2, I suspect it's just a typo (omission of italics).

With regard to point 1: EE would follow the principle "Cite what we use."  That would eliminate the confusion over two titles. Then you can just add a sentence to make whatever explanations will better identify your source.

To your point, the website Newspapers refers to the St. Petersburg Times as the Tampa Bay Times. It's just a reminder to myself.

I made both titles italics simply because in the example in CMOS the title of  New York Times Magazine was italics. I'm guessing that's not correct. If I understand you correctly I should only use one of the titles (which one I don't know) and then explain the other.

Yes, Hendrickson. Cite the magazine in which it appears. Then add your explanations to say that the magazine appears within the newspaper, which Newspapers.com calls by yet another name.
