Do I Cite An Error From A Newspaper?

   An obituary in a newspaper listed the wrong name in the headline. Do I cite the wrong name? The correct married name is Jordan. In the first sentence, they listed the correct name.

 

"MRS. ANNIE MAUD JONES

Mrs. Annie Maud Felts Jordan, 80, of Camden, died last night in the Wilcox Memorial Hospital in Camden after an extended illness.

Funeral services are to be held Friday at 2 o'clock in the afternoon at the Camden Baptist Church. The Rev. Berkley Webb, pastor of the church, and the Rev. Bill Broome, pastor of the Selmont Baptist Church, will officiate jointly. Burial will be in the Camden Cemetery.

Surviving are one daughter, Miss Ava Jordan of Mobile; one sister, Mrs. Kate Boyd of Montgomery; one granddaughter, Mary Ann Jordan of Mobile.

Mrs. Jordan was a native of Camden and a member of the Camden Baptist Church for 71 years.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests gifts to the Alabama Baptist Children's Home in Troy or to the special music fund of the Selmont Baptist Church."

Hello, J Paul. Your citation is well done (except for the need for italics for the two published sources: the newspaper and the website). 

Regarding the incorrect name, yes, that should be corrected. Following EE 2.16, the correction would be made by placing the correct surname in square editorial brackets immediately after the incorrect name. I.e.,

"Mrs. Annie Maud Jones [Jordan]," obituary, The Selma (Alabama) Times-Journal, 18 April 1968, p. 7, col. 1; imaged, Newspapers.com (https://www.newspapers.com : accessed 14 February 2023).
