How to write subsequent reference notes to original document images in Ancestry databases

Hello, EE,

I’m trying to decide how to write subsequent reference notes for Ancestry databases from which I’ve used several imaged documents. I’ve studied EE4, your QuickSheet for Ancestry databases and images, and “QuickLesson 26: Thinking Through Ancestry.com Citations,” among others. I’ve also accessed QL 26’s example of Joseph E. Bryant’s death record via the Ancestry catalog and the collection’s Search and Browse features. QL 26 presents the following citation examples:

  1. First reference note, focusing on the database and citing the web site’s home page URL:

“Kentucky Death Records, 1852–1965,” database with images, Ancestry (https://www.ancestry.com : downloaded 1 March 2019), imaged certificate 59-24650, Joseph E. Bryant, died Wayne County, 31 October 1959; source-of-the-source data.

Note: Ancestry has changed the name of this collection to "Kentucky, U.S., Death Records, 1852–1865," but the former name still works, so I'm not changing it in this post.

  1. First reference note, focusing on the database and citing the path from the collection’s landing page:

“Kentucky Death Records, 1852–1965,” database with images, Ancestry (https://www.ancestry.com/search/db.aspx?dbid=1222 : downloaded 1 March 2019) > Death Certificates, 1911–1965 > 1959 > Film 7054463: Certificates 022501–025000 > image 2202, certificate 59-24650, Joseph E. Bryant, died Wayne County, 31 October 1959; source-of-the-source data.

  1. First reference note, focusing on the database and citing the exact URL:

“Kentucky Death Records, 1852–1965,” database with images, Ancestry (https://www.ancestry.com /interactive/1222/44144_356735-02201 : downloaded 1 March 2019), imaged certificate 59-24650, Joseph E. Bryant, died Wayne County, 31 October 1959; source-of-the-source data.

My questions: Could you please tell me if the following reference notes meet standards? If not, what do I need to add to each? May I subtract anything?

  1. For a subsequent reference note to the same death record, following any of the above first reference note variants:

“Kentucky Death Records, 1852–1965,” Ancestry, imaged certificate 59-24650, Joseph E. Bryant, died Wayne County, 31 October 1959.

  1. For an additional first reference note to the same collection but for a different death record, I deliberately chose one that is a copy of deaths from a different county, submitted to the state in the form of a paginated register, in case those changes affect what I need to include in the new "first" reference note. Changing only the information that differs, I propose:
  1. a. Additional “first” reference note, focusing on the database and citing the web site’s home page URL (and please ignore the numeral 1 before the letter a, which I haven't been able to remove above):

“Kentucky Death Records, 1852–1965,” database with images, Ancestry, (https://www.ancestry.com : accessed 4 July 2024) imaged register page 126, C.E. Jeffers, died Jefferson County, 5 January 1904; source-of-the-source data.

  1. b. Additional “first” reference note, focusing on the database and citing the path from the collection’s landing page:

“Kentucky Death Records, 1852–1965,” database with images, Ancestry (https://www.ancestry.com/search/collections/1222/ : accessed 4 July 2024) > Browse > Death Records, 1852-1910 > ALL > Film 994042: Jefferson, Jessamine > image 11, imaged register page 126, C.E. Jeffers, died Jefferson County, 5 January 1904; source-of-the-source data.

  1. c. Additional “first” reference note, focusing on the database and citing the exact URL:

“Kentucky Death Records, 1852–1965,” database with images, Ancestry (https://www.ancestry.com/imageviewer/collections/1222/images/KYVR_994042-0011 : accessed 4 July 2024), image 11, imaged register page 126, C.E. Jeffers, died Jefferson County, 5 January 1904; source-of-the-source data.

  1. For a subsequent reference note to the additional “first” reference note, regardless of which of the above variants I used:

“Kentucky Death Records, 1852–1965,” Ancestry, imaged register page 126, C.E. Jeffers, died Jefferson County, 5 January 1904.

Thank you so much for sharing your expertise in this forum. I’ve learned answers to questions I hadn’t realized I had from your thoughtful replies to other people’s questions as well as my own.

F.T.C., have you seen EE4  11.39 using "Tennessee, U.S. Death Records, 1908–1965," which is also an Ancestry database?

EE4  has many other examples for subsequent citations to databases (citing both the images and the database entries) that are more or less complex.  For example (staying within the vital records category) 11.31, 11.44, 11.45, 11.46, 11.47, 11.48, 11.52, 11.53, 11.54, 11.55.
