Website Citation Question

Hello, 

 

I am struggling with how exactly to cite this website.

It is a Rockingham County website, but it appears to have a copyright by Tyler Technologies.  Is Tyler the owner of the site or Rockingham County?

When I search for the document, I can see a copy of the original marriage license, but I know that the physical records are kept in the Deed Room at the Rockingham County Circuit Court Clerks Office.

I'm not sure why I'm struggling with the citation for this one so much.

Hello, Laura.

"Rockingham County, North Carolina" (the official government of the county) is the creator of the website. The technological platform it uses is not relevant to the citation. 

You did not say which EE template or section number you are trying to apply, and the site has a pay wall. Without details, I'm flying blind here, in trying to help you. But, speaking in general terms:

  • When we cite official county records that have been placed online, we have two separate things to cite: (a) the original document and (b) the website at which we accessed it.
  • In Evidence Style, we describe that as having a two-layered citation.
  • All details relating to (a) go in one layer. All details relating to (b) go in a different layer, The two are written together in one sentence, with a semi-colon separating the layers.

If you are using EE's 4th edition:

  • Template 10 is the best fit for a local government document accessed at a website, any website.
  • EE's QuickStart Guide tipped into the front of the book also has a quick-find example under "Manuscripts & Online Images."
  • Chapters 8, 9, and 10 discuss county and state government records in considerable detail, to help you understand what you are using and the essential details to record.
