Citation Issues

Identifying specific newspaper article

This is my full reference note for a death notice found in a newspaper:

“Ellenville News”, _Kingston (New York) Daily News_, 26 August 1950, p. 2, col. 5, “Miss Christine Stahl...” death notice; digital image of microfilm copy, _Fultonhistory.com_ (http://www.fultonhistory.com : accessed 3 December 2016); use “the exact phrase” search term: “Kingston NY Daily Freeman 1950 Grayscale - 3516”.

Using Permalinks in Citations

Does anyone use permalinks in citations? Most record images viewed online from FamilySearch have an associated permanent URL (the link that they include in their citations). Even Ancestry.com has relatively short URLs that will bring you to the exact image.

I really like the idea of using these links because there have been times when a client comes back for new research, and I can very quickly pull up relevant records.

Creating a citation in a Facebook Post

Hello,

I searched the forums for Facebook but all I could find was information about citing a Facebook post. Lets say I am posting information, a section or part of my research on Facebook. The paragraph has several citations for the facts. How do you add a citation in a Facebook post?  Do you add the citations at the end of the post? Add a link if the information can be found online? What about facts not found online?

Thank you

Citing Published Compiled Unsourced Family History

I have a published book that is a family tree and stories of a branch of my family. It was compiled and published by a committee who collected information from various branches of the family. None of the information has been 'sourced' or 'cited' in the book. Although some sources can be infured as acknowledgement is given to some people and repositories for their assistance. Information in the book has been collected from personal knowledge of family members. Not all 'chapters' have an individual listed as responsible for collecting and collating the data for the publication.

Old Parish Registers (OPR) ScotlandsPeople

I have recently been purchasing images from the https://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/ website, and feel pretty comfortable with EE 9.56 for citing images from the statutory registers.

However with the OPR's, I am a little confused. To clarify, I am wanting to cite 'images' and not the database.

EE 7.43 clearly explains the cataloging system used by the GROS, which corresponds with research assistance file of the NRS : http://www.nrscotland.gov.uk/files//research/list-of-oprs/list-of-oprs-399-459.pdf

Redundant information in citation/

I have a citation to a collection of abstracts, or perhaps transcriptions, or perhaps both! of newspaper death notices.  I would like to include both the date of death and the date of the newspaper publication in my citation.

I think this citation captures what's needed, but I'm concerned that the third layer ("citing...") that I added to include the publication date is mostly redundant.  Is there a better way to do this?

Thank you,

Brian

Re: Citation of Ancestry family trees (actually, I think they're unproven)

Another descendant of my great grandfather has uploaded numerous family photos and other documents on Ancestry, and her family tree and many others identify him with a first name that I consider to be undocumented. (This name is not used in any document she has uploaded, or anywhere else I have ever found.) When writing about him, I am only stating that a family researcher has identified his name as _____   ________ and that numerous Ancestry trees have recorded it as such.

How do I footnote the search of the Ancestry trees and the prevalence of the name?

Personal knowlege

I am getting my degree in Family History.  In one of my classes we are writing our family history and I have to give citations for things that I have personal knowledge of, such as my cousin's birthdays.  I don't have birth certificates for them but I know their birthdays.  How do I cite this in my history?
